Re: Siemens T1000 restoration
LOL, the machine does look as if it spent time in the ocean. Unfortunately, that is mostly my fault. I acquired the machine maybe 12 years ago. At the time I posted a message on the GreenKeys list asking for anyone who might repair it. One gentleman responded who lived in the Washington, D.C. area. He said that there were still some embassies there who used the machines and he had serviced them. However, I did not follow up immediately with him. Perhaps two years passed before I tried to contact him and by that time I got no response on GreenKeys or any other method. I then put the machine into a barn where it was exposed to animals and other adverse conditions so I have to accept blame for that. It used to be in better condition. I have some non-toxic citrus-based rust remover which I might try on the printing unit but the rust there looks formidable.
What would you recommend for cleaning the boards if I do not use solvents? Could regular soap and water be used?

Re: Siemens T1000 restoration
Soap and water work quite well, and finish off with a rinse in distilled water.
Critically thorough drying out needs to happen - Popping the cleaned boards in a boiler room for a couple of days after the washing process would make a lot of sense - it is a procedure I use here when repairing the keyboards on some British machines.
I am sure there will be other ideas for this as well.

Re: Siemens T1000 restoration
I do not have access to a boiler room so I would have to improvise some other way to dry the parts. I live in Texas so there are not many boiler rooms around my vicinity. hihi
I made good progress today disassembling the machine. I will attach more photos. If there are specific parts of the machine you would like to see please let me know. The bottom plate of the typing unit appears to me to be in the worst condition off anything because of corrosion. I have not been able to get the platen to rotate. I have been trying to avoid forcing it.
Thanks for all the advice.
Kevin

Re: Siemens T1000 restoration
Regarding the mains filter which melted/leaked, should I replace that with a better, more modern, filter? Is there an alternative that would fit in the same space? Should I expect to replace all the capacitors in the power supply?
Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Siemens T1000 restoration
The filter can just be cleaned up I think - it is only the potting compound that has decomposed.

DrT1000 mackes a layer of new potting over the old, so that it stopps to leack out.

Re: Siemens T1000 restoration
Hi Kevin,
Just wondering how you are getting on with the project?
Hopefully you are finding things aren't as bad as they look?

Re: Siemens T1000 restoration
Hi, Sean
I have not had time to work on it lately with all the Christmas activities. I still have off work this next week so I am hoping to make some progress. Thanks for asking.
