Trouble retrieving messages from serial connection

Hello, after several years I am back and active on i-Telex. I've had a number of very nice chats recently. My intention is to route messages to the serial port if my other ports are offline. So I have been testing the serial port. The port works fine - I can call other numbers from it and other numbers can call me. The problem is when someone calls me and I am not there to answer. Their message is stored in the call memory and the green LED flashes. That's good., I can retrieve the from one of the other machines connected to one of the other ports (remote access) by dialing the serial port (34 in my case), pressing FIGS-D, and then tying in my password. But I cannot retrieve the messages from the serial port directly. I press Ctrl-Q and then it does not display the message like it does on the remote access. It only shows 0.
What am I doing wrong?
Here is what I see in the serial port connection:
Ctrl-A: Anwahl, Ctrl-K: Konfiguration, Ctrl-Q: AB-Wiedergabe --> ^Q
^Q
Starte Wiedergabe...
0
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
that's strange. Which version of the serial firmware do you have? (it's printed when you enter the configuration mode).
Do you use a serial cable with hardware handshake?
Do you have enabled the hardware handshake at the serial interface? you may have to play with the settings.

Hi Fred, thanks for your message and quick response.
Here is the message when I start configuration (Ctrl-K): konfiguration seriell+speicher version 233 d
Yes, a serial cable with hardware handshake. It works very well for communicating with another telex machine and I can have a conversation, so I think the handshaking and cable are working just fine.

Fred, check your Lo133. I sent a message from my serial connection. Other than not being able to see my answer back when I used ctrl-i (strange), it seemed to work OK. So sending and receiving is ok. Still cannot check for message with the local connection, but can do it with the remote connection.

Hi Paul, i got your message. I know about the problem with the Lo133.
But i can't read your message because you forgot to enter CR+LF after 68 characters on the line...
I check the message retrieve problem.
Your Serial Firmware Version is quite old...

Thanks Fred. 68 characters! Ugh. I figured the software on the serial board was going to handle that for me by inserting carriage return and line feed since it was already translating lower case to upper case. Oh well. I've learned something.
Sticking to 68 characters will be interesting. I'll need to size my window appropriately so that I stay under 68.
I'm sorry for filling the end of your line with overstruck characters!
I'll upgrade the firmware once I figure out how... any pointers? I did this once many years ago but have since forgotten.
Thanks for writing back to me.

I tried pressing n to review next message. The messages there there. I pressed n twice and then got to the "no more messages" prompt. Here below is the terminal session. The 0 was output by the serial board, not typed by me. The n was typed by me.
Ctrl-A: Anwahl, Ctrl-K: Konfiguration, Ctrl-Q: AB-Wiedergabe --> ^Q

Definitvely strange...
The update instructions are here:
https://svn.code.sf.net/p/itelex/code-0 ... Boards.pdf
The cable itself is the most complicated thing, the update itself is quite easy.

Thanks for the instructions Fred. It will be a while before I can do this because I need to order some parts to make that cable. I had no idea the other boards are updated from the ethernet board. Nice design!
Should I first update the ethernet board using the serial port? If so, I can at least do that while waiting for the parts to make up the cable to update the individual boards. How can I determine if my ethernet board is up to date?

There are some improvements in version 867 but if you "fear" the update, try the update of the other boards with your current one.
Caution: If you have the 45 baud version, i will have to prepare the "special version".
