Austrian model T100S introduction and genearal questions

I finally was able to pick up an Austrian T100S that has been planned for nearly two months. Henning helped me find it, then the seller became ill so I had to wait. It required 12 hours of driving and lots of strange looks from some of my friends (many of you can easily relate to that). Once it is running, I will “introduce” it in the appropriate place in the forum. For now, I have some general questions. I noticed there is no T100S subforum, so therefore I am writing here.

The machine seems to be in very good condition. I hope it works. I was VERY surprised at how heavy it is. It is not something I’ll be able to move by myself. That will make it difficult for me as I’ll have to get help whenever I need to move it (which should be seldom once it is in its final place).

The glass in the cover had been pushed inwards. Thankfully it was not broken and I found the missing gasket inside the machine. This is now repaired and looks good. Next step will be an overall cleaning and oiling and then I will put power to the machine and turn it on and find out what is needed. And also find out its telex number.

I noticed there is both a mail mains power plug and a female mains power socket. Can you tell me what the female socket is for? Is it used somehow to control another machine?

Also, are there any manuals online anywhere for this machine? I searched the forums for T100S documentation and found mention that there was some documentation somewhere but I am not able to find it. I’m sure you can all answer questions as they come up, but sometimes it is nice to read a bit and try to figure it out before hand. Lubrication instructions would be helpful as well.

Here are some photos of this beautiful machine. Can anyone tell me the approximate age of this machine?

Thanks In advance for any suggestions or pointers or advice anyone can provide.

Update on progress: the machine is cleaned up and a new ribbon installed. It is not oiled well yet, so I will not be using it for very long, only for short periods. Trying the paper tape will wait until I do a better job of oiling. Some very nice oil will be arriving soon and I would rather wait for the good stuff.

I am close to having it all working. Perhaps it is working and I do not know it.

I was able to get the configuration to print. Interestingly there are some new option that my i-Telex boards in the US do not have (sperrzeit). But I am unable to work in a local mode. There are four buttons:
IMG_9993.JPG
Note this picture was taken before I plugged it into the ADO8 connector, hence the left button lighting up (thanks Henning for explaining that)

I will label these 1, 2, 3, 4 in this posting because I do not know what the proper name for these are.

I assume:
1 opens the connection for dialing
2 I am not sure what this one does or how it works
3 closes the connection
4 this button rotates 90 degrees and can be pushed in but I do not know what it does.

Here is the behavior I am seeing:

- press button 1 and the machine turns on and button 3 lights up. Using the rotary dial seems to do nothing. Typing an alpha character prints that character followed by ?. Typing 080003 and then carriage return calls 80003! It looks like conversation with a remote telex machine is possible. When I press the asnwerback, the machine reports itself as: 39286 drwal a

- press button 3 and the machine turns off
- press button 2 and it lights up but nothing happens. pressing button 3 turns off the lit button 2. Note: sometimes it does not light up. I suspect there might be some dirty relay contacts that need to be cleaned.
- press or rotate button 4 and nothing seems to happen

Sorry for such rudimentary questions but this is all new for me. thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Paul,

Most things i can answer...

Button 2 shall activate the local operating mode when the unit is idle (unconnected).
In local mode you can type to create perforated tapes or to printout existind punched tapes.

Button 4 is functionless in most cases.

You have selected: "Waehlscheibe = nein" which means "i don't have a rotary dial". So dialing is done by typing numeric keys on the keyboard.
If you configure "Waehlscheibe = ja" than you will have to dial with that. Procedure:
- press button 1 -> button 1 lights with a delay of one second, the printer won't start yet!
- dial the i-telex number preceded by a zero.
- wait until the printer starts (also button 1 goes off and 3 lights up).
--> you are connected.

To terminate press button 3 (in any situation, e.g. also if you have misdialled).

In keyboard dialling mode you need not to "confirm" the entry by carriage return. Just wait.

Obvioulsly there are more dirty contacts. The regular behavious is described above.

That's normal...

Thanks Fred! Local mode is not working. I’ll start with cleaning the contacts.

I don't recall the circuit diagram of the NL control unit now exactly, but maybe there is a fuse somewhere
for the local line supply... :?

When you press the Local Button, then the relay "W" should switch on and hold, the contacts of W
a) switches the loop (sending contacs and receiving magnet) to the local power supply
b) powers the "H" relay which shall switch on the 230 V to the printer motor.

There is ONE common fuse for all lamps and ONE common fuse for all relays. So both fuses seem to be ok.

When a message comes in, an alarm may sound. On mine it is really, really loud. Pressing button 4 cancels the alarm, rotating button 4 switches it off altogether so it will not startle your neighbours.

I was told that actually *having* the alarm in the machine is an oddity as the were generally not installed in German machines. Mine is Dutch and does have the alarm. Neighbours will confirm.

I once moved the article to the T100 department. The "Sonstige Fernschreibtechnik" should be more accessories like FSGs ...
I can move that to the international section if I want. However, there are no categories there

Otherwise I like this machine very much with this special housing :)

I hope Google translated this into English correctly :shame:

Thank you duddsig for moving it to the correct place in the forum.
