Introducing myself

Hi!

I'm Peter, a computer security researcher from the Netherlands with an interest in radio, old computing and communications hardware and a few more
geeky things.

I recently acquired a T1000 which I haven't really found a purpose for yet, but getting it working seems like a good start :)

My username is my amateur radio callsign, PB1X, which unfortunately was used by someone else prior to me so some of the HAM sites will show info on someone else.

When I get bored I like to scan IC dies, like this SN54LS374J:

I guess my main reason to be here is to learn more about maintaining and repairing the T1000, as besides some general electronics knowledge I don't know too much about the specifics of these machines.

Hello Peter,
welcome.

Very nice picture, how do you 'scan' these chips?

Fred

I've got a microscope with a DSLR attached, and then I just take a bunch of photos in a grid and stitch them together using software.

Hello Peter,
welcome ! Interesting hobby. Do you have to grind the IC package down to the die by using a special machine or are hand tools sufficient?

Regards
Patrick

For chips like this one it's easy because they were in ceramic packages that can just be cracked open or desoldered. Plastic packages require boiling them in acid.
