What do I need to start an I-Telex system

Ok, so if I want to start making an I Telex system what do I need to do?

I see some hardware that is available on the main website, and I can understand some of the information that is included, but I do not know exactly the parts I will need.

Will this project require a fixed IP address to work, or is there some clever software that takes care of routing the data?

An English Idiot guide would be very useful :)

Thanks
Sean

Hi Sean,

If you want a "real" I-Telex you need at least:

- an internet connection with a real IPV4 adress
- you must be able to configure a port-forwarding on your router

You do no need a fixed IP adress because I-Telex includes a DDNS Client.

concerning hardware you need:

- a power supply 2x 15V AC approx 1A each
- a backplane
- power regulator card (SV-Karte)
- an I-Telex-card (I-Telex Ethernet card)
- a TW39 card for the teleprinter.

You will also need a "FSG or Fernschaltgerät" for your FS220.

Johannes has a page detailing it: http://francokok.com/index.php/en/i-telex

PS: If you want to start small, there is a simple interface based on Arduino components.

viewtopic.php?f=29&t=589

It lacks most of the features of the modular I-Telex and connects only one TW39 teleprinter , but is fairly simple to build.

But if you use this you will need either a fixed (static) IPv4 Adresses or an external DynDNS service.

Ok, I think the proper I-Telex Hardware solution is a better way to go - Whilst I enjoy fiddling around making things work, there is a good solution already available - I think I will try this. Been a very expensive month here so far, so will have to wait till payday!

In the meantime, I can start looking for the other odds and ends I will need to get the I Telex box made up - it is strange, Eurocard enclosures used to be so easy to find, but are quite a rare thing here nowadays!

Good, I-Telex is a very versatile system. Think about how many teleprinters you mght want to have, if
you would like to have an emulated one with a RS232 Interface for use with terminal programs.

It's good to take some time before choosing what to get :-)

The flexibility of an emulator will be very useful I think

I do not have a lot of space for lots of teleprinters, but I do know of one or two museums here in the UK that have many teleprinters that would look much happier actually doing something!

So, I have a shopping list, am I right in thinking I can build an I Telex in basic format, and then add more modules as my needs expand?

Sorry, another question.

Is the TW39 Special board able to drive a Teleprinter as well as the PC Emulator?

Thanks
Sean

Yes it is.
In fact there are two almost independent units on the board.
One for TW39 and one with a normal RS232 interface (alternative option USB converter on board).

And for special self designed circuits there is also a prototype area on it.

Excellent, So I will need to order:

Power supply board
I Telex board
TW39 Special
Backplane (unless I build this myself to suit enclosure)

I need also to source the following:

2x10VA 12-15v AC supply (i assume two are needed to generate the high voltage needed for the teleprinter loop current?)
A suitable Eurocard housing (I have seen the one recommended, but will probably source something that is 19" rack)

FAG200 converter to run TP?

Anything else?
