Hi All,
I have seen lots of reference to "Spray Oil 88".
I have found this online, but wonder if anyone knows what it actually is? I could just purchase some and get it sent to the UK (I have a lot of mechanical machines that haven't seen any lubrication in over 20 years to deal with)
Of course, there are issues with sending aerosols and oils via the postal service, so ideally I would like to get something that is a UK equivalent rather than importing this product.
I think we all agree it isn't WD40, but how about a product we have here called Duck Oil, or perhaps Plus Gas?
I guess the main characteristics are the capillary action, and the non resinous qualities that are best?

Re: Spray Oil type 88
Here in Germany something like that is also called "White Oil" used also for lubrication of sewing machines.
I don't use Spray Oil 88 but any other spray oil intended for sewing machines.

Re: Spray Oil type 88
Thanks Henning - Interesting topic really.
I've had a look at the safety data sheet for spray oil 88 and outwardly it looks like a mixture of kerosene and another grade of distillate that has been treated so that the oil cannot form chains to make a build up. it also contains a low percentage of phosphoric acid, which will make it work well on rusty parts, but I should imagine not so good for long term use on aluminium components.
I have found a UK stockist, which eases getting it delivered here - it certainly isnt cheap!
I will have a look for spray sewing machine oil too - given the sorts of metals found in some sewing machines this may well be kinder to an old machine.
For general lubrication I have been using 32 grade Hydraulic Oil - the T68 seems very happy with this, but I have so many Creed machines to look at I almost want to wash them all down with brake cleaner, then flood with a penetrating oil to try to release all the sticky bits - going to be a major task going through each one prperly!

Don't make a "rocket science " out of it. Any oil is better than no oil.

Re: Spray Oil type 88
Oh, no rocket science here Henning, just trying to find a good product that will reduce the amount of ongoing maintenance - modern oils have to be better than what was available 50 years ago when the 444 was released

I've used Kontakt Chemie's "Sprühöl 88" on almost everything for about 15 years. It's like the luxury version of WD40.
I wouldn't use anything else.
