Siemens T1000 restoration

I have a Siemens T1000 machine that I want to restore. I acquired it several years ago here in the States. It appears to have been used as a Telex machine. It is in rather poor condition. I have been trying to disassemble it to begin evaluating it. I have an Operator's Manual and a booklet called "Description - General Section". Are there detailed instructions for how to disassemble the machine? I have removed all the components from the base but I need to know how to disconnect the typing unit from the power supply unit. I will try to post some photos later if that is allowed.

There were literally countless versions built for specific customers and for further assistance we need to check out
what kind of machine (version) you have got there at all.

Attached are some photos of the parts I have disassembled so far. I have made photos of the mainboard along with one corner where it appears that something from the power supply, perhaps, melted down onto the mainboard. This is in the top right (rear right?) corner of the board as it would be if you were facing the machine. There is quite a lot of rust on the printing unit. There are some small clear plastic (?) "panes" or flat pieces inside the reader which are loose. The punch unit is dirty but does not have much rust on it. I think it will simply need cleaning and re-lubricating.

Fair to say that poor T1000 has had a very hard life!

Have you tried cleaning any of the boards yet?

Hello, Sean. No, I have not cleaned the boards or anything else yet. I wanted to show the condition as it is now. Most of the leads on the diodes on the "polaritat" board have been broken. I do not know if I did that accidentally when I was removing parts or whether that might have been done intentionally to disable the machine. Based on a piece of tape on the front of the cover, I suspect this machine may have been used in Telex service for a government agency so it is possible that it was intentionally disabled. The main question I have now is how do I disconnect the power supply module from the typing unit? The typing unit may be a lost cause. Most of the rest of the disassembly I have been able to figure out but not yet the proper way to disconnect the power supply. I have some automotive air flow sensor cleaner that I was going to clean the boards with if that is appropriate. It usually does well on electronic parts and is safe for plastics.

Hi Kevin,

The Diode Matrix board is the machine "Personality", so operating modes, and I think Identifier are "programmed" with this.

Be very careful with the use of solvents on these PCBs, certainly the screen printing is quite fragile.

I have not got a T1000 here in the office to advise you, but I have removed the PSU from mine in the past - Best to wait for the experts (Henning or maybe DrT1000, although I also think Detlef and Isabrand have great experience in repairs of these machines)

All T1000 are worth repairing, and I think there is a limited stock of spare parts available between forum members.

What is your plan for using the machine - back into Telex service?

Hello Kevin

No worries -- the board labelled "Diode = Startpolarität" (meaning diode present = start polarity, "0") is just for programming the answerback code. Every group of diodes is am ITA2 character, with a clipped diode being "1" and an untouched diode "0". So it should be possible for you to determine the answerback code

I do have such a machine running, but I'm afraid I'm not an expert for restorations. The main points of failures, from experience, seem to be the leaking mains filter whose remains you discovered on the main board, the power supply itself, as well as some tantalum capacitors.

I haven't yet removed the power supply myself, but if I remember correctly it should come off backwards after loosening two bolts on top. As for the images, the machine indeed seems to have had a very hard life, and I wish you the best of luck.

Sean, yes, I might return it to Telex use. It could be a secondary machine. I have a Model 32 Teletype working now on i-Telex. The T1000 has the number 99 64 29 and "SEAQUEST GRC" printed on a piece of tape still on the front of the cover so my guess is that that was the "personality" of this machine. The cover itself is in good condition. I will try to post more photos later of the cover, keyboard, and punch unit.

Ah, so given the wording on the machine, I rather suspect it has spent time on the ocean (perhaps from the condition of the internals in the ocean might be a better description )
